While the description next to this scratched-up tank indicates that thing is a northern pipefish, I'm convinced it's the love-child of the seahorse and a slimy eel they've now had the good sense to quarantine so something like this never happens again.
Seahorses are so cool. They are fun to look at but they don't really move around a lot, so I end up getting bored staring at the tank. Also looking in the tank and having my vision distorted by the glass gives me a headache. But they are really cool.
Having never seen a pipefish, I'm completely at the mercy of the folks who labeled the tank. No doubt aliens were involved in this hideous life form's creation.
Don't even go there. I'm so desperate I emailed Ziva to ask her what in hell they had in mind when they chose that V word for a prompt. Sadly she's having the same difficulties as the rest of us.
I may have to disagree with you on this one (OMG-hard to believe!) The underwater world is fascinating to me. Maybe even more than the outer-space world. Never seen a live seahorse. Kinda cute.
Lisa, the small tank they had the octopus in was pathetic. I love seeing what's underwater & I'm equally fascinated. Some of it was disturbing because the tanks were tiny. The center has been around for a long time and has a great reputation so they must know what's best for the underwater critters in their care. It's just that some of it was jarring to see. (Outer space never held my attention. So much to see on this planet and not enough time to see much of it ~ I do love star-gazing and adore the moon.)
It looks like something that would swim up your naughty bits while you're vacationing in South America and then eat you alive from the inside out once you get back home. Nasty business, that.
I got nuthin' for video. I'm thinking about posting a link to one of the adult movies I starred in, but I'm embarrassed about the cheesy mustache I had back then.
Seahorses are always so sad looking. I'm stuck in a bowl. Boo Hoo. I'm not a fan of indoor fish but give me a set of scuba goggles and I'm happy to investigate their native habitat. I can see why the indoor sea horses are sad. No comparison.
I think you're onto something Mike. This is why I much prefer birds ~ at least you can see them coming to peck your eyes out until afterwards when you can't see a damn thing.
I just spent an hour down at the ocean making short videos especially for you. Got home and there's absolutely nothing on my Android. I spent over an hour trying to figure out where they went but there they were: GONE. They were wonderful ~ terns and gulls feeding along the tide line, a sailboat in the distance, waves rolling to shore ~ GONE!
Awwww! How can one not "awwww" when presented with a photo of a seahorse? They are so delicate and so mythical looking. You know what is amazing? It is amazing that you went out of your way to go to the science center to take this wonderful photo rather than just sticking your foot in a bucket of water and snapping a photo. You are so dedicated.
Mine too. I went out twice today to try to shoot some ocean footage with my phone. Both times the videos were there when I left and gone when I got home. I don't know where they're going but I've wasted far too much time on that prompt. I may have to shoot myself to save face.
I love seahorses -- once owned one, in fact -- but what's that other odd creature in this pretty photo? It's disturbing in appearance, and unnatural.
ReplyDeletesmiles...what a cool picture....seahorses are so cool...

ReplyDeleteHa! Fishy love-child... perhaps you can capture some fishy soft porn for the upcoming video prompt.
ReplyDeleteWow... you have a seahorse? Impressive. I love how male seahorses pop the babies out of their bellies.
ReplyDeleteThankful for the clarification on that other lovely 'creature'.
ReplyDeletewonderfully colorful fish - great photo!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't look anything like the pipefish I've seen. I think that you are right, unless some sort of alien probing was involved.

ReplyDeletecool photo subject. :)

ReplyDeleteOoh! I love the moon, too. :)

ReplyDeleteSeahorses are sofa king cool! I really like this photo, Cheryl!

ReplyDeleteNow I'm back to square one. Square one sucks.
By the way, NO on the adult film. I'd be likely to blush and we all know New Englanders don't blush.
ReplyDeletePretty much everything at the science center was sad looking. I went to see the blue lobster and left fairly depressed.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh!!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE seahorses! I've always thought I was really a mermaid, and as a mermaid, I'd obviously need a giant seahorse to ride on.
ReplyDeleteYes, you may lock me up now.
Hey I've got a horseshoe if you think it might come in handy.
ReplyDeleteoh how cute- I love sea horses!
ReplyDeleteWhat? Male seahorses pop the babies out of their bellies?

ReplyDeleteWhat? We have to make a video? Oh, hell no! All my videos are on those giant VCR tapes. :)

ReplyDeleteI went for the blue lobster and came home with a seahorse and a side of anemones.
ReplyDeleteThey're amazing, but seriously, nature's wonders or freaks of the sea.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like tonight's special at Red Lobster!
ReplyDeleteYes! Fun fish facts that I learned from years of teaching 4-6 year olds!
ReplyDeleteIt's about time some of the men took responsibility for this process!
ReplyDeleteI don't like sea horses. The males do the Momma work. I don't want to give anyone any ideas.
ReplyDeleteYou won't find blue lobster on the menu since they're more rare than sapphires. The anemones looked delish.
ReplyDeleteThis is why men weren't built to give birth. WIMP!
ReplyDeleteA little of this and a little of that = fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteoh cool, you have a sea horse. how awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteSome of kinds of sea horses, male keep eggs instead of female. They have unique shape and I like them. Nice photo!
ReplyDeleteYou mean you're not already locked up? Dear gawd, I can't believe you're running loose in the streets.
ReplyDeletei just love the seahorse, such an amazing little creature ....nature at its most amusing!
ReplyDeleteGREAT shot, with even BETTER comments! "It looks like something that would swim up your naughty bits while you're vacationing in South America"
ReplyDeleteAnd now the Beatles song is playing in my head.
ReplyDelete=)
'something slithery' - Great tag :)
ReplyDeleteSeahorses are weird, appealing... but weird!
I find seahorses enchanting for some odd reason. ("Something slithery" appealed to me more than its actual name.)
