| 99% Full Pink Moon ~ Shot on April 5, 2012 (Weather wasn't looking promising for the 6th.) |
I love looking at the moon almost as much as I enjoy watching birds. Because I don't use a tripod, I'm thrilled when the full moon rises in early evening.
Native Americans gave each full moon a name based on the rhythms of nature. April's full moon is most commonly known as the Full Pink Moon because pink ground phlox or pink moss was in bloom
Here at Deckside Thoughts, my goal is to
You're welcome.

maybe i will go fishing tonight by the light of the moon....that might help...really anything could help my fishing...happy saturday cheryl
ReplyDeleteThose aren't boring facts. They're fascinating. And that picture is perfect.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed these facts ... I do need to get out and use my tripod for those moon shots. I always forget! Have a great weekend Cheryl.
ReplyDeleteWow. A great shot and an astronomy lesson! Thanks. I'm a stargazer myself. I'm so glad that now I know what a pink moon means. I love that song by Nick Drake. It became famous all over again about a decade ago when it was featured in aVW commercial. Are you familiar with it? The entire album is fantastic.

Perfect photo!! Thanks for the lesson as well - never heard of the Pink or Fish moon! Now I have another tale to go with the forsythia - can't wait to tell my dad!
ReplyDeleteyou absolutely crack me up. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shot of the 'Full Pink Moon". My husband, Alex, is Navajo and he's heard of naming the full moons too. But he doesn't remember the names used.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever learned so much from three sentences. Thanks, Cheryl.
ReplyDeleteAnd the shot is lovely.
I just remembered from when I was little we'd go fishing the first full moon in May. It's when the brim bed.
An incredible moon shot, Cheryl. I love it.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the last 9 days of the month. You can do it.
K
This is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteHow come I cannot memorize in what order the Finnish presidents served, but now I'll never forget why April's full moon is called the Full Pink Moon? The photo is gorgeous, Cheryl.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I was a trifle not to see a bird flying across the face of the moon...but hey, I'll let you off.
ReplyDeleteSorry Brian. It's a new moon. Maybe a moonless night will help?
ReplyDeleteIf I could have used an archival photo, you'd have had one. ;-)
ReplyDeleteIf you ever want to know the names of the others, just holler. (I can't remember the order of the American presidents ~ mostly on purpose.)
ReplyDeleteThanks Misty. Fun to see one after missing so many to clouds.
ReplyDeleteYou can't see me -- I think and hope -- but I'm laughing because, like you, I looked up all sorts of facts about the moon before embarking on my mission to photograph it. I didn't realize the moon had so many names, and frankly, I think it's fascinating.
ReplyDeleteNice photo, Cheryl.
Thanks for the encouraging words, Kay. I'll make it. I'm not a quitter. I want to every single day but this group keeps me going.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm glad you learned something from my ramblings. (Bream look a lot like sunfish. Of course, I had to look it up! It's what I do.)
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda. I finally downloaded a list because I got tired of googling it every single month. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you. I do my best.
ReplyDeleteI almost tagged you in this to be sure you knew I was thinking about you when I wrote this.
ReplyDeleteSomeone posted it on FB on the 6th. First time I'd ever heard it. Really pretty song. (I haven't replied to your comments because I just found all of them in Disqus's spam folder. Disqus doesn't appear to like links. :(
ReplyDeleteDon't we all. ::sign::
ReplyDeleteHope you're enjoying a lazy day weekend!
Thanks buddy. I know a little about a lot of things but I don't know a lot about anything.
ReplyDeleteYeehaw! Another geek! Welcome to the brighter side of life.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Now all of this thinking about shad is making me hungry - for shad roe! Shad roe cooked in bacon fat like my mother used to make...covered in melted butter just in case it already wasn't going to slowly kill you!
ReplyDeleteLeave it to you to take a perfect photo of the moon! You are so dang good. I am tickled the color of Malibu Barbie's ass in Kristen's photo to find out that April's full moon is the Full Pink Moon. I am going to amaze my friends (I have two) by nonchalantly spitting out this information.
ReplyDeleteI'd hadn't put the two together but that works for me!
ReplyDeleteYou are too funny, Cheryl. This cracked me up:
ReplyDelete"Dear gawd, make it end."
And so did this:
"my goal is to bore you to death with facts you'll never be able to use at a cocktail party keep you informed."
To say nothing of how much I loved your photo of the moon. I know how hard that is to capture!
=)
Shoot. The strike-outs didn't show in my comment.
ReplyDeleteOh well, you get the idea...
=)
Hi Cheryl! Congrats you fantastic {Rustic} capture was one of our top 3 Finagle a Foto winners! Thanks SO much for joining us, & I'm look forward to you being our guest co-host this week!
ReplyDeleteCome on by & get your winning button... if that's your sort of thing?!
What a gorgeous shot. And those facts are very interesting. As long as there isn't a quiz at the end of this challenge. Please tell me there isn't a quiz at the end of this challenge.
ReplyDeleteAw shucks. When it rises so early it's really not as hard as it is when it's darker.
ReplyDeleteThanks Melanie. I'll be by. I'm looking forward to co-hosting.
ReplyDeleteHoly shit! If there's a quiz, I'm out. Out, I tell ya, OUT!
ReplyDeletefantastic photo. I love the daytime moon, so much MORE than the nighttime moon. Sadly, I'm usually asleep in the day time.
ReplyDeleteThanks Meleah. Early evening. I do love the moon setting in the morning too. Because of our location, we don't often see it.
ReplyDeleteIs that ... is that ... is it possible? Do I see the US flag on that moon? Oh, wait ... it's just schmutz on my screen.
ReplyDeleteHeh, heh.
Dang, woman, do you ever take bad photos??
Seriously, great shot! (And kindly pardon my snarkasm - it's the meds.)
;-)
Back in the saddle already? You're amazing! What's the diagnosis?
ReplyDelete(The number of bad photos I take is huge ~ billions and billions.)
First of all, gorgeous shot. Secondly, this part? "Dear gawd, make it end." THE BEST!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo and great commentary. as always :)
ReplyDeleteNow that's a great looking moon!
ReplyDeleteThe moon is big and round.
ReplyDeleteAnd is very helpful during my hike in the early morning.
The moon and I, a bond. I love this photo.
ReplyDeleteI KNOW! I will last until the 30th, but the condition I'll be in once this is over is not going to be pretty.
ReplyDeleteIn a past life, I was a teacher. With a whip.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike. You don't want to be around me when there's a full moon and weather has gotten in the way of my ability to take a shot of it.
ReplyDeleteThat must be an amazing walk when it's full.
ReplyDeleteThanks Terra. I'm a lunatic too.
ReplyDeleteMoon photos are my weakness it is awesome I get it.!

This is a fantastic moon shot. I have yet to get one I like with my camera. So, I'll just covet yours for now. Keep up the great work...you're almost finished!
ReplyDeleteAlmost only counts in horse shoes. April truly is the cruelest month.
ReplyDeleteLol, your "boring facts" were almost my favorite part. I like how you photographed the moon in daylight a tad bit better. Rest assured though, I'll bust those facts out at my next cocktail party.
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that you got the gradations and features of the moon in your shot! And the blue sky as to the expected black ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in theater as a lighting designer/technician, and we needed a realistic moon on the backdrop, we used a reverse composition technique: the gobo would actually have the dark parts cut out with a dark blue gel and, the backdrop would be a lighter color. It was an amazingly striking an realistic effect.Anyway, as my own moon shot was not as good as I had hoped it would be, I plan on working on the night shots more after this challenge is over. I'm going to pick up a couple of different filters, with the theater technique in mind, to see if that makes any difference. And if it doesn't? I suspect I'll at least learn something along the way :-)
You people are doing an amazing job, keep up the good work.
