Almost exactly two years ago, Tropical Storm Danny took a swipe at New England. We came home from our midwest trip to find a backyard full of tree.
It took close to three weeks for the neighbors to finally remove that damn thing from the yard. We strongly suggested they remove the whole tree because the bulk of the dying tree overhung our garage. In the end, they decided not to spend the money.
Today Tropical Storm Irene barrelled through and took care of all of our problems.
Yep, that's the new view from my deck. The tree managed a perfect 10 landing. No humans or animals were injured. It missed seriously damaging the surrounding four garages and homes. It nicked a couple garages on its way to comfortably rest on about six of our 35-feet tall arbor vitae trees. GAH!
I'm grieving the loss much worse than I would have two years ago. Back then I didn't know what a gold mine this tree was. Every bird that passed through the yard landed on that tree. I'm going to miss them being almost close enough to touch. I could sit stock-still on my deck and snap photos without them ever noticing me.
And worse still, this was the tree my furry friends visited a time or two.
The upside may be that all that clear sky could be a fine place to watch the big birds float around. I'm trying really, really hard to ignore those gawdawful utility wires and satellite dishes.
And maybe our weather vane will actually be right . . .
. . . more often than it's wrong.

Oh. . . the loss of the birds and furry friends. . . I'm so sorry too! They will be missed from this site.
ReplyDeleteHate to hear about the Arborvitae trees too. I love those!
awww...i feel bad for the coons...they are homeless now...at least no one was hurt...i guess..
ReplyDeletelooking at the brighter side, Irene did not damage any life nor property in your block ....
ReplyDeleteGood thing there wasn't more damage. Glad everyone human and animal were okay.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they didn't take the whole tree down. At least it didn't hit your house. Sorry it took the bird's playground.
ReplyDeleteYes, so glad about the humans and pets, but sad about the trees.

I am just glad that you came out okay ... but the tree is a loss, how will we ever be able to monitor the growth of those baby raccoons ... and all of those wonderful bird shots ... i hope they replant!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about the tree. I'm relieved to hear that your property is okay otherwise!
ReplyDeleteI love love trees and am sorry you lost such a relic of one. I am glad no one was hurt and appreciate you sharing your story.
ReplyDeleteThere you were really lucky ! Nobody hurt, that's the most important. You will see the birds will find another place to be watched and the little racoons too. (I only know them from a zoo !)
ReplyDeleteAnd the neighbor saved money ! that's the tip of the top !
Well, I'm glad the tree didn't do a LOT of damage. It's so frustrating when a neighbour won't cut down a tree that could damage YOUR property. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteJust glad no was was hurt...
ReplyDeleteOh no. Thankfully no one was hurt.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad no one was hurt!
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard and sad to lose a tree. I can understand your mourning it.
ReplyDeleteYour attitude is right, though...trying to focus on the new, expanded horizon seems like the best way to go.
(I'd still rather have the tree, though.)

Just don't send the raccoons my way. I'm up to my knees in homeless chipmunks already.
ReplyDeleteIs there any such thing as a racoon box to encourage them to take up residence in one of your own trees?
ReplyDeletewithout the tree, I hope the raccoons don't move to your attic. I watched a TV docu, and they did.
ReplyDeleteMother Nature can appear so uncaring in her approach to landscaping our yards. I'm betting that, with all the rooftops and fencing, your fine feathered friends will still stop by. The raccoons? Hmmmmmmm......not sure where they'll go.
ReplyDeleteOh, so sad to lose a big, old tree but really glad your garage made it out alive!
