Look at Their 'Staches, Now Look at My Armpit. It's Movember!

Way back in September, there was an entire month devoted to raising awareness for prostate cancer. Unfortunately, the dufuses (dufi?) of the species didn't read their cause calendar too closely. They missed their month. I had a way cool button up on my blog sidebar for the entire month.

In fact, it looked just like this.

If you pushed it, it led you right to the Prostate Cancer Foundation website.

Now the dufi are all, "Boohoo, poor us. Women get the entire month of October to raise awareness for breast cancer, why can't we have our own month to raise awareness for prostate cancer and other cancers affecting men?"

Turns out, even though they're dufi, there is another whole month for them to make a bold statement.

The Movember Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that runs the global men's health initiative. Each year, Movember, the month formerly known as November, is responsible for the sprouting of thousands of Mo's (Australian slang for moustache, where the movement began) on men’s faces around the world, raising vital awareness and funds for men’s health, specifically for cancer affecting men.
The fundraising side of things is pretty damn cool. Men who become Mo Bros start the month of Movember clean-shaven, then grow a moustache for 30 days. This year one of my favorite dadblogger collectives, DadCentric has formed a team. I've joined as a Mo Sista to help with the fundraising. Besides, it was the only way I could finally join DadCentric. I've begged and pleaded with Jason to be their cheerleader but he's steadfastly refused my offers.

In the spirit of the whole hair-growing theme, I've decided not to shave my left underarm hair for the entire month of November. Not that it's going to be much of a stretch (except to get that damn photo). The growth will likely be unnoticeable. Most of my hair has always been on my head while my body's almost as hairless as a newborn baby's.

See?

I am willing to go to almost any lengths for a cause I believe in.

Almost.

Down to business.

In the US, all donations are tax deductible as they'll be going to Movember Foundation United States which will equally distribute the net proceeds to Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG: all 3 are recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

If you want to become part of the insanity feel free to join the DadCentric Team as a Mo Bro or a Mo Sista and start your own fundraising page.

If you prefer to just quietly donate a buck or two, you can visit Deckside Thoughts Mo Sista Page. Comments on my armpit are not only welcome, they're strongly encouraged.

As time permits, I'll be updating the photo on my sidebar as well as the one on my fundraising page.

Thanks for taking a look at my armpit.

CRAP! I just found out they rank the fundraising pages within the teams by donations received. When making donations, please click on the button that's labeled "DONATE TO ME."

I'm not at all competitive.

15 thinkers thunk a thought:

  1. And to think, until yesterday morning I had a goodly growth myself! Great idea. Hope this catches on, not only for men's cancer awareness but to give men a kick in the pants to take their health seriously. I have a hubby who is refusing to go back to the cardiologist because he "feels fine".

  6. I hate mustaches... but I am a big wipe out cancer supporter... so I offered up the idea to the hubby. He is now deciding whether to grow his stache this month.

  7. There are those of us females, at a certain stage in life, who are quite capable of growing our own mustaches for the month of Movember.

I'm not saying I'm one of them....or anything......

  8. You are awesome. So glad you joined up!

  9. Come on then... How many pit shots did you have to take before you got one lined up straight?

  10. Why worry about your own month or week or day to spread awareness of health issues? Autism, MD, cancer, heart disease, diabetes etc are year round health concerns. Awareness should be every day.

But I must admire year willingness to forgo the clean shaven pit. I'll be your cheer leader....GO CHERYL!!!!!!

  12. What a great post! We always talk so openly about women cancer, so this should wake the men up to think about theirs too.
