A Degree in Three! Whoopee! Go Jocy!

. . . because I can actually SEE her . . .

. . . on the internet.

Unbelievable but true. I was going to get up at 4:00 a.m. to make the journey to maybe, just maybe, actually see her today. At her party on Friday, my brother told me that:
  • even she didn't want to go
  • he wouldn't go if she weren't his daughter
  • there were actually over 1,700+ graduates besides her
  • we had no reserved seats because we don't bleed Dartmouth green
  • there would be professionals photographing the event
  • he thought it could be viewed on the internet
As I write, I'm listening to the valedictory speeches from my big comfy recliner in my cozy home. I can look at the video stream any time I want. Upstairs, I'm downloading the video on my big honkin' desktop computer. Life is good.

I just saw her! Not get her *diploma! Up close and personal! Woohoo!

I bet my sister-in-law is bawling like a baby. I would be too if I cried.

Pffft.

Bragging rights are now mine. Well, sort of. She looked like me when she was a baby. Had night terrors just like I did. Was precocious as all hell and smarter'n'most. There you go. Bragging rights established.

This kid is amazing. She was valedictorian of her high school class. She couldn't care less. Almost full ride to Dartmouth for all her semesters. Ain't nothin' but a thang to her. She never got into the whole college culture. A blessing in some ways.

She got her BA in three years. Pffft. What's the big deal? When I asked her if she'd received any awards, she didn't have a clue. She'd already moved on to working in her chosen field while she commuted back and forth to school to finish out the year. She didn't have time to check into things like awards.

She's always looking forward to the next thing. That's her gift—the one I think is innate. She's talented in ways that boggle the mind. Even as a bit of a child drama queen, she still had to work very hard to perfect her craft. But that gift of forward-thinking, that's the one that'll take her as far as she ever wants to go.

Congratulations Jocy! You earned it.

Peace.

*Who knew they got their diplomas later?

10 thinkers thunk a thought:

  6. She's about 10 in that photo, which I didn't take. I did add the cap. She's eating good ole southern fried dough while visiting in NC.

  9. Now that is the way to watch a graduation. I didn't go to my college graduation. UMass Amherst and it's hordes that weekend held no appeal for me. I told my parents I would never do that to them. Mostly I knew my Dad would be a seething ball of rage at the insanity and make us all nuts. Your niece sounds like an amazing young woman, Congratulations to her.

  10. THREE YEARS?! At Dartmouth?! That is quite a brain.

Smith College (my alma mater) has a cool diploma ceremony after commencement. http://www.onlineuniversities.com/rankings/10-colleges-with-the-most-extravagant-graduation-ceremonies/
